Here we guide you to the best choice of Hennatura products for your hair. Natural herbal dyes blend with your base color – which can be a natural color or obtained with hair dyes. Some natural herbal dyes can give a strong color, some other are even completely neutral. You can even adjust the strength and the vibrancy of the results by using different application methods.

My starting hair color is not original and is chemically dyed
If you have treated your hair with chemical dyes, you can use Hennatura products but the color results may not be what you expect. In many cases, your hair will become brown instead of, for example, red. Because of this reason, we do not advise using our standard coloring products on chemically treated hair.
There is one exception: you can use all our products if you lightened your hair exclusively with hydrogen peroxide. In this case the results will be predictable and you will benefit from the restoring and nourishing properties of henna and the other herbs.
If you still want to dye your chemically treated hair with Hennatura products we strongly advise to do a strand test! You can read how it works here.
My starting hair color is not original and is naturally dyed
In this case you can use all Hennatura products, with predictable and beneficial results. Read the next section to learn what color you can expect and how to adjust the color strength and vibrancy according to your preferences.
My starting hair color is original and is not dyed
Also in this case you can use all Hennatura products, with predictable and beneficial results. However, in all cases (whether your color is original or not) we strongly advise to do a so called strand test on your hair if this is the first time you use natural hair dyes.
How does a strand test work?
This is very simple. Collect some of your hair from your hair brush – ideally for a few days so that you have a small yet voluminous tuft of hair. Then mix a small amount of Hennatura powder (typically 20g or less will be sufficient for one test) using one or both methods described in the Hennatura instructions. Wrap the hair tuft in food preservation plastic and let it sit in a warm place (at least 25 C) for 2 to 6 hours (depending on your preference, as you can read further in this post). Then rinse the tuft with lukewarm water and note the result.
When do I need to do a strand test?
Typically only if you use a Hennatura product for the first time, or if your hair was chemically dyed. Otherwise you will not need to do a strand test each time.
What Hennatura color should I choose?
With natural hair dyes not all colors are possible for a given starting hair color.
- If your base hair color is dark, you cannot obtain a lighter tint
- If your base hair color is light, you can obtain both a light tint (but not lighter) or a darker tint, depending on application method and time
The table under is a guide to the hair color you can obtain given your base starting color:

How do I achieve and maintain a bright yet vibrant red color with Hennatura products?
If you want to achieve a a bright (not too dark) and vibrant color with Hennatura red colors, we advise to:
- Use the fast application method, keeping henna mix on your head for not longer than 2 hours in warm days or 4 hours in cold days
- Avoid full length repeated applications, only apply on hair growth
How do I achieve and maintain a dark deep red color with Hennatura products?
If you want to achieve a deep red color (for example dark enough that it covers greys without orange tones) we advise to:
- Use long application method, where you let dye release for a long time (4 hours, in a warm room, 25 C) and apply on your hair for 4 hours
- Alternatively, apply immediately and keep on your hair for 4 to 6 hours.
We have a detailed post here about how henna based dyes work and what are the advantages and disadvantages of different application methods.
Hennatura style advise
Needless to say, colors preferences are a personal choice. However, Hennatura advises to choose a hair color which intensity is similar to the one of your natural hair color. If your hair is dark, go for a dark or deep Hennatura product, viceversa if your natural color is light choose a light or bright Hennatura hair dye. In this way your growth will be more subtle and combined with the amazing blending effects of natural hair dyes, your color will look vibrant yet natural.
